Thank you for your interest in the Akron Police Department. We hire officers under the civil service system, requiring an application, competitive examination, physical fitness testing, pre-employment investigation (polygraph), interviews, psychological and medical examinations. We do not have an open academy. An applicant must successfully pass all of the aforementioned requirements and accept an employment offer, then attend our police academy as an employee. Candidates must be within the age range 21 years through 31 years of age. The candidate cannot turn 32 years old before the time of the appointment. Time of appointment is the first day of paid employment. The starting salary is approximately $45,000 dollars per year. This general information is based on our last examination in 2008 and is subject to change for future examinations. Our city is not accepting applications for police officers at this time.
